Vigla (Polyhni)

4km south of Plaka Leonidion, on the beach of Poulithra, and specifically on the hill of Vigla, there is fortified settlement, the ancient Polichni. Vigla hill (159m altitude) dominates the surrounding area and the bay of Poulithra. At its top and around it are preserved relics of an ancient settlement, which is surrounded by a strong wall built with the pseudo-isodomic and pseudo-polygonal system.

The west side wall is dated in the last quarter of the 4th century B.C. South of the top there is tank carved into the natural rock. The orifice consists of large stones and has a diameter of 0.90m.

Few relics from ancient Polichni were found in graves NW of the hill near the Poulithra - Pelleta road and were delivered in 1964 to the Astros Museum. In the medieval years a square tower of 5m was built at the top of the hill, which would serve as an observatory. This is the interpretation of the modern name «Vigla».
