Sanctuary Of Apollona

Apollo's worship in ancient Kynuria was of primary importance. Apollo appears bearing two main names as Apollo Tyritas and Apollo Maleatas (but also as Pythaious and Lithissious).

In the sanctuary of Apollo Tyritas, at the top of the hill of Prophet Elias at Melana, a square altar and a retaining wall of the 4th c. B.C. remain.

The worship at the sanctuary of Tyritas began in the 8th century B.C. and was very vivid in the 7th, 6th and 5th centuries B.C. Tyritas (which means «he who is occupied with making cheese») was probably an old local deity who helped the produce of milk and cheese, but over time this local deity was identified with Apollo, bearing the old name as an adjective.

The sanctuary of Apollo Maleatas was at the northwestern tip of Kosmas, known as Prophet Elias today.

Among the multitude of findings, there is a bronze statue of a warrior that bears the inscription «ΧΑΡΙΛΟΣ ΑΝΕΘΕΚΕ ΤΟΙ ΜΑΛΕΑΤΑΙ», which means «Charilos dedicated this to Apollo Maleatas».
